An engineer based out of an Indian origin and his team has successfully developed an AI based screening system, which can help in the detection of diabetic retinopathy that has a huge margin of 95.5 percent accuracy. The system developed by him is capable of finding out itself without any need of consultation from any expert ophthalmologist. This new system can deliver a reading in less than one minute.
This AI based screening system was first presented during the 123rd meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and ever since, it has gained a huge global attention. This also sends a huge wave of relief among a lot of common people from across the world.
The diabetic retinopahty usually develops over the time with those patients who are suffering from diabetes. It is seen in people who do not have an adequate control over the sugar levels in their blood.
It is a known fact that the high level of sugar in a human body can result in the damage of the tiny blood vessels that is present behind the eye. As a result, we can see tiny budges coming out of the vessels, which in turn release fluid and blood straight into the eye’s retina.
Such a constant release of the fluid can result in swelling, which is often referred to as edema and this happens on the section of the retina that is very much crucial for the vision of a human being. If we tend to ignore this without continuing the proper treatment, it can also lead to permanent blindness.
The treatment for diabetic retinopathy are available, but these treatments work well only when the condition is detected in the earlier phases. Due to these reasons, most of the ophthalmologists across the world recommend getting the patients to get tested every year so as to be on a safer side.
